BAE Systems Surface Ships
BAE Systems Surface Ships is proud to support the Scottish Energy and Environment Conference. This is an excellent opportunity for both Govan and Scotstoun yards to bring together their combined resources and demonstrate their commitment to this event and the wider issue of environmental best practice.
BAE Systems strives to work with the local community, and in particular engage with primary school pupils to look at ways to protect our environment.
As part of that philosophy and that of business in the community, our employees visit local primary schools and encourage the pupils to get involved in the BAE Systems School Environmental Award.
From the environmental poster competition, which was first run 4 years ago, to a theme of recycling and reuse, we have seen a huge number of innovative items that have been created from items that would normally be discarded. Two years ago the competition then changed for the schools to design a logo for a bag for life; the winning entry was then printed on to a bag and distributed at the conference.
This year marks another change of task in the Award. We are asking for the children to design a picture with an environmental theme that can be used to represent a month on a calendar that we will produce. The calendar will be distributed at the conference to the delegates.
The fact that interest in the Award from schools in and around Glasgow is growing at quite a rapid rate illustrates the emerging interest in environmental affairs at an early stage in the education of our children, by preparing them to take on the environmental concerns of tomorrow.
BAE Systems Surface Ships is actively involved with local environmental forums such as Renfrewshire Energy and Environment Forum (REEF), and our valued relationship with the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency assists us in the development of future initiatives.
As a company committed to continually improving our environment, we were proud to receive a Business Commitment to the Environment Award, a VIBES award in the large business category as well as maintain our ISO14001 accreditation, which shows the organisation's commitment to improving environmental standards.
All of this complements BAE's vision of being a systems company innovating for a safer world, using the power of our people, partnerships, and the wider community to achieve this primary aim.
