Energy Efficiency Design Awards 2010
Gill Davies
Manager, Energy Efficiency Design Awards
Energy Saving Trust
The £1 million Scottish Energy Efficiency Design Award (EEDA) scheme was announced in February 2009, and opened in April. Non commercial organisations, such as local authorities and registered social landlords were invited to submit bids for grants of up to £250,000 to support projects that demonstrate a replicable, affordable and innovative approach to improving the energy performance of existing homes, particularly those considered hard to treat.
The 5 successful projects, set to share an expected £993k, come from bases in Kirkcaldy, Macduff, Upper Largo, Skye and Lochalsh and Westray. All 5 of the winning projects are retrofits in housing that is considered 'hard to treat' with 3 located in listed buildings. The residents of 4 of the sites are social tenants and 1 consists of private owner occupiers.
The second round of the Energy Efficiency Design Awards opened to applications on October 2009 and will close 19 April 2010. The maximum award is £250,000 and entries will be assessed after the closing date. This year, applicants may also apply for up to £5,000 for costs of any feasibility studies to undertake for the project.

Accounting for Carbon in Business
John Pooley
Managing Director
The John Pooley Consultancy
Accounting for carbon as a resource and factoring it in to strategic decision making are core competences that the business/organisation of the future needs as we move towards the low carbon economy.
This presentation will review these issues and look at what organisations can do to turn carbon issues to their advantage. In particular it will address:
- Corporate carbon literacy and numeracy - who needs to know what?
- Who will be the carbon accountants?
- Carbon, CSR and sustainability - one size fits all?
- Integrating carbon into business strategy - a carbon plan or a business plan?

Will the new LED technology change that and deliver even bigger carbon savings? The presentation will look at how LED's are taking over from traditional light sources and offer new possibilities for the designer.
